Nokia has released press photos and information about the new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet.
The main two additions are a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and GPS Satellite Location.
In order to power the maps for the GPS unit, Nokia have equipped the N801 with 2Gb of memory specifically for storing them. Considering map software is so often missing from GPS equipped devices these days, this is not only welcome, but worth applause. It would have been so easy to compromise and use one of the precious card slots rather than the dedicated memory it has been blessed with.
The screen brightness is up another 20% or so, not that this was ever a problem, as the N800's screen is bright and easy to read. Resolution stays the same at 800x480 pixels across the 4.1" display. Weight has gone up a tad, the N810 tips the scales at 220g.
The operating system has grown up a year, the OS2008 version adding a Mozilla based browser with enhanced Adobe Flash capability and various media playback improvements. Existing N800 owners will shortly be able to download the new environment to their N800 devices.
A common bugbear of the N800 was the side-mount webcam which made it awkward in some cases to remain in the centre of the picture during IM chat sessions. The camera has been relocated to the bezel of the N810.
Nokia's sales blurb is now singing the praises of YouTube and Skype, applications the N800 struggled with, especially video. If the improvements promised are functions of a better OS rather than enhanced hardware, the N800 owners will benefit in full from the new version.
Availability is touted as being late November in the United States at around $480 and taxes, which if the mysterious rules of The Same Stuff Stuff Sold Over Here™ applies, expect a street price around £250 or €350.
Devicewire.co.uk will be selling the official UK specification device when available early next year with full UK support and warranty.
